Not one, not two, but five Darnas performed stunts and high-kicks on “ASAP” Sunday, leaving the audience guessing whether any of the Kapamilya actresses on stage will fly as the superheroine in a much-anticipated ABS-CBN project.
Shaina Magdayao, Empress Schuck, Kim Chiu, Iya Villania and Cristine Reyes appeared on stage wearing Darna’s iconic two-piece battle gear as part of the “Supah Dance” segment of the concert variety program.
Each Kapamilya actress was seen performing martial arts-inspired dance moves, with Reyes being the lone “Darna” to fly in the closing parts of the production number.
Of the five ABS-CBN stars, only Reyes has publicly expressed interest in portraying Darna in a planned Kapamilya project on the Mars Ravelo creation.
In April, the family of the late comicbook writer inked a deal with ABS-CBN granting it rights to 13 characters created by Ravelo, including Darna, the love-lorn mermaid Dyesebel, and the everyman-superhero character Captain Barbell.
Last Tuesday, the Kapamilya network, during its “60 Years of Television” trade event, announced to advertisers that it is working on projects based on the Ravelo characters, including Darna.
Since debuting on the big-screen in 1951, Darna has been played by over 15 different actresses in TV and film versions of the character’s comicbook outing, with Vilma Santos‘ 1970s portrayal considered to be the most iconic take.
The most recent portrayals of Darna were by actresses Angel Locsin and Marian Rivera, in 2005 and 2009, respectively.
