Johnny Manahan Likens Julia Montes to Young Claudine Barretto

Star Magic head Johnny Manahan likened actress Julia Montes to former Kapamilya star Claudine Barretto.

Barretto was among the prized actresses of ABS-CBN before she decided to transfer to another network in 2010.

Manahan, whom Montes considers as her second father, said he saw something special in the teen actress while she was growing up.

“Bata pa iyan nakikita ko na iyan. Ang reaction ko noon, I ignored her. But as she grew up, that’s when I realized that you can no longer ignore her. Mayroon siyang something na parang Claudine Barretto na bata. It came to a point na hindi mo na talaga mai-ignore yung bata. That’s when we knew na we had something extraordinary,” he said.

Manahan said he never realized that Montes will grow into an actress who is passionate about her craft.

Saying he has seen Montes’ movie with actor Coco Martin, Manahan admitted that he was surprised that he saw “maturity and control” in the 18-year-old.

“I’m very proud of her. Napanood ko ‘yung pelikula [nila ni Coco]. Nagulat ako, natuwa nga ako. I didn’t think she was that good. Alam ko magaling siya pero mayroon siyang maturity na hindi ko alam kung saan niya nakukuha,” he said.

“Besides being incandescent on screen, she has maturity and the control na ibang klase siya. Sana huwag lumaki ang ulo. She will go very far,” Manahan added.

Montes, for her part, thanked Manahan for all the kind words and for always being there for her.

“Gaya nga po ng sabi ko, siguro God’s will na hindi ko makita ‘yung dad ko kasi maraming nandiyan para sa akin especially Mr. M and yung mga nagiging tataytayan para sa akin na lagi talagang nandiyan,” she said.

Montes has never met her biological father.
